Color Management

Color Management is tricky as noted in my article under PMS Color Matching as many variables will effect the "Perceptual" outcome of your intended color.  "Color Calibration" is the key to good Color Management.

"Color Calibration" is matching a specific ink to a specific fabric, paper, vinyl or film.  Then matching these variables to a specific monitor.  Color calibration is done so the color seen on a monitor is as close to the color that's printed when all these variables come together.

Different fabrics, papers and vinyl's all have different "White Balances or White Points."  In other words, each may be a slightly different shade of white.

Many things affect "Perceptual" Color Rendition.  On your monitor, ambient room lighting, age of your monitor, (and your eyes), temperature your monitor is running at, and color gamut your monitor is set at will effect your intended color.

Think of it this way...  When you walk into an electronics store and see "hundreds" of TV's on the wall, they all show a slightly different color.  Which one is showing the true PMS color?  They all are... According to that TV.  And if you hold up your PMS Color Chart to that TV, it probably will show a different color than what's on your PMS Color Chart.  That's because the TV is not calibrated to your PMS Color Chart.

MUST READ

Getting an RGB Color (Red, Blue, Green), does not give me a "Print" color.  RGB represents a "Screen" color from "Your" monitor.  And those RGB numbers are for your reference only... Not Mine!  They don't do me a bit of good, and here's why...

If you're running your monitor in a "warmer" screen mode, you'll see less contrasting blue and more saturated red mixed with green.  You can change your temperature setting from warm to cool and still get the same RGB number but see a different shade of your color.

Color may also be categorized by CMYK valued numbers.  But those numbers alone won't solve the complete puzzle.

CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are known as "Primaries."  They are your primary "Ink" or print colors.  Printers (including your desktop printer, may also use additional colors such as Lc, for Light Cyan and Lm, for Light Magenta and so on.  The internal RIP, (Raster Image Processor) manages these colors.  Those additional ink colors you won't see in most photo editing programs.  The physical printers that squirts out the ink use them for smoother color transitions and deeper, richer colors.

So sending us a CMYK color taken from your design program may not deliver your expected color either!  So what do you do?  Keep Reading...

Mike (717) 379-4555     Mike@ActionDisplays.com

What are PMS Numbers - A company called Pantone, (www.Pantone.com) has assigned a number to each color chip on their PMS Color Chart.  This way, you can take your PMS color chart and say, "Mike, I would like PMS 226C as my color."  Even if I was color blind, our equipment would still tell me if I was using PMS 226C or not.

Not being color blind, I can look at PMS 226C, and see what red you are looking at!

See how easy it is?  And you wonder why I'm half nuts!

PMS 226 C vs. PMS 219 C

PMS 226 C vs. PMS 219 C

Call Mike (717) 379-4555

Two important examples to illustrate...

Example 1.  A customer wanted the particular red color she was seeing on her monitor.  On our monitors, (some of which are color calibrated), her red was actually a brown color!  Her monitor that was that far off!

Example 2.  We have a series of Mac's and PC's running at our shop, around 12 last count, (yeah I know... It's a sickness!).  Anyhow...

Jay in production was doing a mock up of a blue tablecloth on the PC.  When he pulled the tablecloth image to the Mac monitor, the tablecloth was purple!  Why?  Because these two monitors, the Mac and that PC are not color calibrated to each other!  (We don't use these two machines for color matching as it takes quite a bit of time to color calibrate monitors, so we're not overly concerned about colors from those two machines.  But it does show the point, you can't trust your monitor.)

So you can see the importance of a PMS Color Swatch Book!  It's like you and I are looking at the same deck of cards!

If you came from my PMS Color Matching page, this is the article I was referring you to.  How to get an "Accurate Color Match."

"Accurate Color Match"

A returning customer wanted us to match their tablecloth to a specific PMS color.

First, we have to print a target sample for ourselves.  Then we check to see how close our printed color matches the requested PMS number using the PMS Color Chart.

We view PMS Color Matching requests in our "In House Photo Studio" where we have balanced white lights for fine art reproductions, (called Gicle'e reproductions.  Gicle'e - Wikipedia).

If a color doesn't match as close as we think it should, we have to go back to our work station and tweak the colors one way or another.

Shown to the right is a color channel mixer where we add or subtract colors to achieve our targeted PMS Color.  We may have to go through this "Print and Tweak" process several times before a close enough print match is acceptable.

PMS Numbers

Some PMS numbers will vary "Perceptually" and be more effected by light conditions and natural shadows.  In that case, we may print "3 or 4 up" and send the variety of samples to our customer.  Then they sign off on the color sample they are pleased with.  (Extra fees apply.)

Here's the "Rest of the Story" you need to read...

So our customer gave us their PMS number.  We hit their PMS number as requested and printed and manufactured their tablecloths with logo.

We sent them their tablecloths.  Yes, plural as they ordered twenty tablecloths.  After they received their tablecloths, they called and said their tablecloths didn't match the brochures with their PMS number, (their brochures were ordered from a different company).

They used the tablecloths at their show, but afterwards wanted us to redo their tablecloths and sent them back to us.

After receiving the tablecloths, I checked the tablecloths with the PMS Color Chart again.  I asked others in the shop to verify I wasn't going blind.  All agree we hit the PMS numbers as specified.

I talked to our client again, then asked them to send their brochure with their corresponding PMS number.  Well... You guessed it, whoever printed their brochures didn't hit the PMS numbers!

We sent the tablecloths back to our client as they were satisfied with our efforts and explanation... They weren't too pleased with the guy that printed their brochures though.

So that's why it's important to send us a sample of the color you want printed and have a PMS color chart at your disposal.

Call me to discuss your color management.

Mike (717) 379-4555

PMS Fabric Color Samples. PMS 301u Royal Blue.

It should be noted, because of all the variables beyond our control, (like room lighting conditions you will be viewing your project under), we Can Not guarantee what you see will be identical to Your PMS Color Chart!  Especially if you have an older PMS Color Chart as the colors may have faded a bit.

If we are putting your logo on a custom tablecloth, that means putting your logo on fabric.  Fabric has more light absorbing properties than does coated paper.  Therefore your tablecloth may appear to be slightly different than your PMS Color too.

Above is a Gold Logo on a Lime Green Tablecloth.  Gold is a "Reflective" color.  It is highly susceptible to ambient room lighting.

Coated paper, or laminated graphics have more light reflective properties.  More light is reflected back in to your eye with coated paper or laminated stock than when printing on a fabric.  And depending on shadows, your lighting conditions, and the substrate we are printing to, these will all effect the way you perceive your perspective, perceptual and predominant proposed colors.

Ok, I got carried away with my "P's" in the above Paragraph.  But I think you got the Point.  "Pun" intended!

(Power to the P's!  Ok, Ok, It's late in the evening and I shouldn't be working on the website right now!  Could be a Problem?)

All being said and done.  I wanted you to know some of the basics to color management.   We do everything in our control to give you the color that most closely matches your corporate identity under the given circumstances.

Like the literally hundreds of new customers we get each year, we want you too, to be returning next time you need another display item!
